Running injuries
IT Band Syndrome & Runner's Knee
Pain on the outside of the knee, or around the kneecap, when you run. Both come from load the knee can't handle yet, and both are fixable without giving up running.
The short answer
Athlete PRO Sports Medicine in Sarasota treats IT band syndrome and runner's knee with one-on-one sports physical therapy. We find the training load and strength gaps behind the pain, treat it the same day, and rebuild your mileage with a plan that fits your race calendar. Most runners keep running while we do it.
Which one do you have?
- IT band syndrome: sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee, often at the same point in every run, worse downhill
- Runner's knee: an ache around or behind the kneecap, worse on stairs, squats or after sitting with knees bent
- Both: they often start after a jump in mileage, more hills, a new shoe or a training block with less recovery
Why rest alone rarely fixes it
Both problems come from load the knee can't handle yet: weak hip and calf strength, a big jump in weekly miles, or form that loads the knee more than it should. Rest lets the pain settle, but the gap is still there when you go back to the same mileage.
How we treat it
We test hip and calf strength, single-leg control and force-plate symmetry, look at how you run, and check your recent training. Then we treat what hurts and build your mileage back step by step.
- Running assessment and gait analysis
- Hip, knee and calf strength testing with numbers you can track
- Hands-on treatment, dry needling, shockwave or laser when they fit your plan, all included in your session
- A run plan that adjusts your volume and intensity instead of stopping you
- Return-to-run testing before you go back to full training
Common questions
Should I stop running with IT band pain?
Usually not completely. Most runners keep running at a lower volume and intensity that stays pain-free or close to it while we fix the cause. Full rest calms the pain, but it usually comes back when mileage returns because nothing about the cause changed.
What's the difference between IT band syndrome and runner's knee?
IT band syndrome is pain on the outside of the knee, often starting at the same point in a run and worse on downhills. Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain) is an ache around or behind the kneecap, often worse on stairs, squats or after sitting. Both are load problems, and your evaluation tells us which one you have.
Do I need an MRI for IT band or kneecap pain?
Rarely. Both are diagnosed with a hands-on exam and movement testing. If something in your exam points to a structural injury, we refer you to our team physician quickly.
How long does it take to get back to full mileage?
It depends on how long you've had symptoms and what your testing shows. Your clinician gives you a plan and a timeline at your first visit, and you see your progress in numbers at every visit.
Do I need a referral?
No. Florida lets you see a physical therapist directly.
Do you take insurance?
We are a cash-pay clinic. Many athletes use HSA or FSA funds, and we can give you a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.
